Sri Lanka have moved to second place in the CB Series table after bowling India out for 238 in the 46th over to secure a 51-run win at the Gabba. Set 290 to win, India fell well short in their chase for the second time in three days, leaving Brisbane without a point and falling from first on the ladder to third. A whirlwind 47-run cameo from Irfan Pathan kept India with a sniff until late in the game, but a 92-run fourth-wicket stand between Suresh Raina (32) and Virat Kohli (66) was their high point, after early wickets made for an uphill battle….

India plummeted to their second successive defeat in the Commonwealth Bank ODI series Down Under as Nuwan Kulasekara celebrates taking the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar casual effort saw them lose to Sri Lanka by 51 runs in Brisbane. The result means India must not only win both their remaining matches, but they will also be dependent on the other results to secure their spot in the best-of-three final. The loss seemed inevitable after India lost their top three batsmen with just 54 runs on the board while chasing a target of 290 set by the Sri Lankans. Two of those wickets went to man-of-the-match Nuwan Kulasekara who benefitted from sticking to the basics of good line and length. Captain Virender Sehwag was out for a duck to an extremely poor shot off just the second ball of the chase. Tendulkar looked good to start off with but merely flattered to deceive as he clipped the ball onto his stumps when on 22. Gautam Gambhir, who despite having two scores in the 90s this series while opening the batting, was dropped down to number 3 and once again looked in form before he guided a ball from Kulasekera to Thisara Perera in the gully. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina did stage a comeback and stitched together a 92-run partnership that was aided by some sloppy catching from the Lankans. Raina got a lucky let off when on four as Dilshan failed to hold on to a chance off Angelo Mathews. Virat Kohli had two escapes himself both courtesy Dinesh Chandimal at deep mid-wicket. Halfway through the tournament, India were table-toppers but the two matches in Brisbane could completely change the standings. Not only were India comprehensively beaten by Australia on Sunday, they have also lost their captain, and easily their best batsman of the series, MS Dhoni, for Tuesday’s game. The most intensely debated topic this series has been India’s rotation of their three experienced openers. With the middle order missing the assurance of Dhoni, India will be tempted to abandon the policy and pick all three. There are question marks over the fitness of two of them, though both are expected to pull through — Virender Sehwag sat out the previous two matches due to a back spasm, while Sachin Tendulkar went for a precautionary MRI scan after being hit on the helmet by a Brett Lee bouncer. With the four-man pace attack also not working for India on Sunday, they also need to rethink the bowling combination. R Ashwin has excelled in both games against Sri Lanka so far, and given how effective Xavier Doherty was on Sunday at the Gabba, India will have to find a way to accommodate Ashwin ……
