Bhal manuh – 3rd episode – dr pradeep sarmah
All across Assam, Dr Pradeep Sarmah is giving ‘economic independence’ to thousands of ordinary rickshaw-pullers by enabling them to own a rickshaw, through his Rickshaw Bank project. The premise is very simple: isn’t it unfair that while middle-class people everywhere have an opportunity to buy a bank-financed taxi car, there is no one to finance a rickshaw for a poor man to use as a means of livelihood. Through Dr Sarmah’s Rickshaw Bank, a poor man could take immediate possession of a rickshaw, and pay back the loan through EDI (equated daily installments). Dr Sarmah’s second achievement is that he teamed up with IIT-Guwahati to design a very sleek, sturdy and lightweight rickshaw that lessens the burden of the rickshaw-puller. Dr Sarmah has been invited by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to showcase this design as an engineering case study….
